‘Abayat al-Gaz’ is an experimental technology exploring cultural rituals & gender inequalities
In Qatar, the role women should play in society, political and business leadership is a question at the center of controversy, since custom and tradition strongly influence gender roles and inhibit equality. The Abayat al-Gaz is a wearable device that empowers Qatari women to become actuators rather than passive objects of admiration in al-Gaz (Gaz: “a middle eastern past-time that involves flirting; considered culturally inappropriate for females”). In exploring the hidden courtship rituals of Qataris, the Abayat al-Gaz imitates the behavior of men to get the attention of women by roaring their car engines and playing music that reflects their personality. To signal her interest, the wearer of the Abayat al-Gaz nods towards a man in his car. Captured by an accelerometer, the quick motion initiates a modern Middle Eastern song in the in-built speakers to reflect her attitude. Abayat al-Gaz is an experimental technology that offers a platform to explore cultural rituals and generally accepted gender inequalities. The Abayat Al-Gaz was exhibited as part of ’Acts of Listening from Future Generations’ at the FireStation Gallery in Qatar (2020).
